As the founder and director of the Health Services and Informatics Research team at Parkview Health, Dr. Toscos has been leading an interdisciplinary team focused on finding optimal ways to leverage health information technologies to empower patients to effectively manage their health.

Dr. Toscos’ expertise as a technologist, clinician, and health services researcher is represented in her work as a synthesis of health behavior theory and user-centered design techniques to build technology that can help improve health literacy, support decision making, and nudge positive health actions. She has acted as the principal investigator of numerous externally funded studies aimed at using health technology to engage individuals living with a chronic disease including cardiovascular disease, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and various mental health conditions. Dr. Toscos’ work has been funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, as well as pharma and medical device industries.

She has led the program evaluation for grants from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) aimed at substance use disorder treatment and suicide intervention. Dr. Toscos has successfully designed, developed, and deployed many diverse technology-based solutions as a research scientist including several focused on addressing the social determinants of health.

Dr. Tammy Toscos holds a PhD in Informatics from Indiana University, MS in Computer Science from Purdue University, and completed an AHRQ funded Postdoctoral Health Services Research Fellowship at the Regenstrief Institute, Indianapolis.
